Al Shank Sez….
Welcome to my weekly blog. If you have seen our posts on Linkedin and Facebook today you know it is about other things that happened in 1941 besides the founding of Al Shank Insurance. Today we highlighted the candy, M and M’s. They were invented in that same year as a means for soldiers to enjoy chocolate without it melting. During World War II the candy was sold exclusively to the military. Funny how something so mainstream can have such an unusual story behind it and it is also amazing how the military gets all the good stuff first before comes to the public. So besides M and M’s think cell phones, hummer vehicles, camo, GPS equipment and on and on and on. Of course, those items are usually more affordable by the time we get them too.
Here are some other notable things about that year. Did you realize that only 55% of all U. S. households had indoor plumbing in 1941? Men had an average life expectancy of 63.1 years while women had a life expectancy of 66.8 years. In 2018 that number had climbed to 78.7 years on the average for both men and women……and last year in the Covid plagued year of 2020 that number dropped about 1 year. A new car would set you back about $850 and the American Dream of owning your own home would cost an average of about $4,075. Wow, how things have changed.
